About DTV
Television stations US nationwide must switch from the analog TV signals to digital television (DTV) on February 17, 2009. In the U.S., all U.S. television broadcasts must be digital on Feb 19, 2009 by order of the Federal Communications Commission. This was enacted as law in early 2006, and as of March 1, 2007, all new television sets sold in the U.S. that can receive signals over-the-air, including pocket-sized portable televisions, must include digital or HDTV tuners so they can receive digital broadcasts. Currently most U.S. broadcasters are transmitting their signals in both analog and digital formats; with only a few broadcasting digital-only signals. Analog broadcasts must be switched off by that time.
The FCC has determined that an external digital tuner can simply be added to non-digital televisions to lengthen their useful lifespan. Low cost DTV tuners will be available in early 2008. The U.S. government will also be introducing coupons to reduce the price of some digital tv converters.
DTV is a new type of broadcasting technology that delivers movie-quality picture and sound, more channels, and is also capable of delivering high definition television (HDTV) to consumers with HD television sets. While the benefits of DTV are remarkable, millions of households risk losing television reception unless they take the steps to receive a digital signal.
